What is a neutral zone infraction?

A neutral zone infraction occurs when a defensive player crosses the line of scrimmage and causes an offensive player to move (flinch) before the ball is snapped. This penalty typically results in a 5-yard penalty against the defensive team. It is considered a pre-snap penalty that can disrupt the flow of the game and give the offensive team an advantage. Coaches and players are often taught to maintain discipline and avoid neutral zone infractions to prevent giving the opposing team free yards.
